Fast Company – Amazon’s data comes to life

For the last Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards Conference in New York we‘ve been working in parallel with agency R/GA to interpret Amazon‘s complex bestseller database.

The editors of the magazine challenged us to show their audience what could be done with a couple of weeks of time, a very specific source of information and a team of motivated designers, researchers and data analysts: we accepted the challenge and this is what we came up with. The brief we received was to visualize the 100 Best Sellers in the books category of the store, gathering information from Amazon’s product API.

We then decided to focus on 5 different markets (US, Canada, UK, Germany and France) and to extend our search to the Most Wished For and Most Gifted lists for all of them. What came out of our study are 3 data posters, that tell the stories of the aspects and phenomena we found more interesting in the datasets we analyzed.
